Accessible Health Care Services

Completion of this instructional unit indicates the ability of the learner to utilize health systems performance data sources to identify trends and make comparisons.

Challenge 1 I Challenge 2

Upon completion of the challenges required for completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Define accessible health care.
  2. Examine data ranking indicators to assess the performance of health systems at the state and county levels.

Challenge 1: How Does Your State Rank?

The State Scorecard is a tool that can be used to measure access to care, quality of care, health outcomes, and health disparities across the United States. The State Scorecard reports state performance for providing accessible health care based on benchmarks for 42 indicators of access, quality, costs, and health outcomes. Take a look at your state in the interactive link below. How does your state rank? Go to the State Scorecard to access data, select a score card, then a measure before clicking on your state. Overall rankings for the state on a number of indicators are available.

How to Use the State Scorecard
  1. Go to the State Scorecard website.
  2. Select your home state.
  3. Download the State Profile for your state.
  4. Review the overall ranking for your state.
  5. Examine the indicators used to measure Access and Affordability , including:
    1. Adults without a usual source of care.
    2. Adults without a dental visit in the past year.
  6. Examine the indicators used to measure Prevention and Treatment, including:
    1. Children who did not receive needed mental health treatment.
    2. Adults with any mental illness who did not receive treatment.
  7. Report the rankings on indicators where your state demonstrates improvement and those that show a decline in performance.

To complete this challenge, use the State Scorecard to assess the performance of your state for providing accessible health care and determine if your state has improved or worsened over time.

Challenge 2: How Healthy is Your Community?

Explore health data rankings to understand how health is influenced by where we live, learn, work, and play. The County Health Rankings and Roadmaps website provides annual rankings using more than 30 measures. Watch the County Health Rankings video to learn about County Health Rankings and then gather data on the county you live in!

To complete this challenge, use county level data to assess the performance of your county for providing accessible health care and compare the results to other U. S. counties.
