Completion of this instructional unit demonstrates a fundamental knowledge of the components of the Culturally Informed Community Nursing Practice Model.
Upon completion of the challenges required for this instructional unit, you will be able to:
- Explain the Culturally Informed Community Nursing Practice process model.
- Apply components of the Culturally Informed Community Nursing Practice process model in a community assessment.
Challenge 1: Culturally Informed Nursing Practice
Nursing practice must incorporate an understanding of the patient’s – or person’s – culturally embedded lifestyle to effectively help them manage their human responses to health, illness, and treatment and advocate for the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations.
To complete this challenge, reflect on the importance of being culturally informed. Use the following prompts to guide your reflection:
- It is essential for nurses to know more about a patient’s or person’s lifestyle, beliefs, values, environment and the cultural groups to which they belong. Why?
- Consider two distinctly different communities (as shown in the video). How might these communities have different responses to how they promote their health?
Challenge 2: Conduct a Community Assessment Using the CICNP Process Model
In this overview of the Culturally Informed Community Nursing Practice Process Model, we continue to talk about primary health care and how our nursing practice advocates for communities and populations. This overview builds on many of the principles we have discussed to describe how nurses actually practice culturally informed community nursing practice.
*Note: You will be prompted to click on the Help page for this interactive content. It is very important that you review the Help page so you will know how to properly navigate through this module.
To complete this challenge, apply components of the CICNP process model to outline and elaborate your earlier work with the community in which you grew up or the community where you currently reside.
Explain the Culturally Informed Community Nursing Practice process model by reviewing your earlier memory map and reflections of your childhood commmunity or the community in which you now reside. Use the different components of the CICNP process model, in particular the community assessment — both the cultural inquiry and the community health assessment — and elaborate (i.e., fill in some details) on your previous reflection for the My Childhood Community challenge in the Developing Partnerships instructional unit. After you have outlined the different components of the cultural inquiry, the environment, the population and the social organizations within your community, and you have outlined and filled in the community health assessment, reflect further guided by the following prompts:
- What else have you discovered about your community?
- What are some opportunities, strengths and challenges?
- In what ways can nursing make a difference?
