Introduction to Interprofessional Education

Achievement of this badge demonstrates a basic understanding of the significance of interprofessional education and collaborative practice to improve the experience, outcomes and costs of health care.

Challenge 1 I Challenge 2 I Challenge 3

The most commonly accepted definition for Interprofessional Education, adapted from the Centre for the Advancement of Interprofessional Education in the United Kingdom and the World Health Organization, states that it “occurs when two or more professions (students, residents and health workers) learn with, about, and from each other to enable effective collaboration and improve health outcomes.”

Upon completion of the challenges required for this instructional unit, you will be able to:

  1. Define interprofessional education.
  2. Identify the value of interprofessional learning to professional development.
  3. Create your own vision for recognizing different kinds of interprofessional education.
  4. Recognize competency-based interprofessional education.

Challenge 1: What is Interprofessional Education?

This learning challenge defines IPE and describes its value to you in your practice. Review the About Interprofessional Practice and Education webpage from the National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education for an overview of IPE. Then complete the What is Interprofessional Education elearning module. The learning module includes a case study and several interactive activities that highlight practical ways to recognize and optimize your teamwork experiences.

To complete this challenge, you will earn the certificate of completion for the What is Interprofessional Education elearning module.

Challenge 2: A Patient’s Story: Amina

In watching the video telling Amina’s story, you should recognize the components of a health care system and environment that must be present to provide optimal patient and community care in a Nexus. After watching, you should develop an understanding of the elements of the Nexus at three levels ‐ micro (clinical or community), meso (health care and university systems) and at the macro (policy). Watch closely and see if you can identify some outcomes that result from a health care system that integrates interprofessional practice and education.

To complete this challenge, consider Amina’s story using the following prompts to guide your reflection:

  • How is Amina’s care program similar to and different from health care that you are familiar with?
  • Based upon Amina’s story, what do you believe are key elements of a truly integrated partnership of health care and educational systems—a Nexus?
  • What are the benefits of working in partnership for health care delivery and health professions education? To Amina? To students? To administrators and providers? To the community?

Challenge 3: Carl in the Nexus

In watching the video about Carl in the Nexus, you should be able to recognize how the alignment of practice and education around patients, families, and communities can contribute to improved patient experiences and outcomes, improved population health, and a decrease in cost of care. Watch closely and see if you can identify some outcomes that can result from a healthcare system that integrates interprofessional practice and education.

To complete this challenge, ruminate on Carl’s experience using the following prompts to guide your reflection:

  • How does the “care and learning team” change Carl’s story and add value to health education and the health care system?
  • Based on your personal experience and perspective about health care as a patient, a family member of someone who was a patient, and/or a provider, respond to the following:
    • How is the care that Carl receives similar to the care you or a family member has experienced? How is it different?
    • What role does the patient and his family take in this model of health care? How does that ultimately affect his health and quality of life?
